REG recently completed the structural engineering of a new straw-bale home, currently under construction on the gulf of Mexico near Corpus Christi, Texas. The house faces the open water, and is designed to absorb the lateral loading from 130 mph winds. This is about 40% higher windspeed than typical inland design values—and double the wind force! The straw wall detailing includes reinforced plasters with metal “X” bracing in the walls that transfer the lateral loads to the pier foundation typical of coastal construction. More photos and the owner’s construction blog can be found at http://sarahstrawbale.blogspot.com/. As a result of engaging on this project, REG is now registered in the great state of Texas.
